Flag History

Adopted: 1871

The liberal government of Miguel Garcรญa Granados decreed the flag in 1871, turning the shared Central American stripes vertical to set Guatemala apart from its neighbours. Swiss engraver Jean-Baptiste Frener designed the coat of arms: a resplendent quetzal perched on a scroll bearing the date of independence, 15 September 1821.

โœจ Did you know?

The quetzal on Guatemala's flag was long believed to die in captivity, making it the national symbol of liberty โ€” the bird also gives its name to the country's currency.
