How flag emoji work

Most country flags are not single Unicode characters. They are valid pairs of Regional Indicator Symbols associated with a two-letter region code. For example, US combines the indicators for U and S. The current Unicode definition is documented in Unicode Technical Standard #51.

Why designs look different

Unicode defines the sequence, not one universal drawing. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and other vendors create their own glyphs. Colors, folds, outlines, proportions, and tiny emblems may therefore look different after you paste the same flag into another app or device.

Make flags accessible

Do not use a flag as the only label for an important country, language, or identity choice. Screen readers and older systems can announce it differently. Add visible wording such as โ€œMexicoโ€ or alternative text such as โ€œFlag of Mexicoโ€ when the destination or meaning matters.
