Flag History
The 1979 independence flag carried the coat of arms on a breadfruit leaf, recalling the trees Captain Bligh brought to the island. In 1985 the government commissioned Swiss graphic designer Julien van der Wal, whose three green diamonds replaced the leaf and gave the flag its clean modern look.
