Flag History

Adopted: 1971 (design from 1908)

Nicaragua returned to the blue-white-blue of the old Central American federation, settling on the current design with its coat of arms in 1908, though it only became official by law in 1971. The arms show five volcanoes between two seas, a red liberty cap, and a rainbow arching over it all.

โœจ Did you know?

Thanks to the rainbow in its coat of arms, Nicaragua's is one of only two national flags in the world containing purple โ€” the other is Dominica's.
