White and red have marked Malta since the era of the Knights of St John, with legend crediting Count Roger the Norman with granting them in 1091. King George VI awarded the George Cross to the entire island in April 1942 for enduring relentless Axis bombardment; the medal joined the flag in 1943 on a blue canton, which was replaced by a red border at independence in 1964.
