The 1992 independence flag bore the sixteen-ray Vergina Sun excavated from the tomb of Philip II of Macedon, provoking Greece into a trade blockade. Designer Miroslav Grcev drew the current eight-ray 'new sun of liberty' — a line from the national anthem — and it was adopted on 5 October 1995.
