The 1992 independence flag bore the sixteen-ray Vergina Sun excavated from the tomb of Philip II of Macedon, provoking Greece into a trade blockade. Designer Miroslav Grcev drew the current eight-ray 'new sun of liberty' โ a line from the national anthem โ and it was adopted on 5 October 1995.

A Greek trade embargo forced the flag's redesign in 1995, and under the 2018 Prespa Agreement North Macedonia agreed to withdraw the old Vergina Sun from all public use.
