What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Slovak patriots first flew a white-blue-red tricolor during the 1848 revolution against Hungarian rule, deliberately echoing pan-Slavic colors. Because the plain stripes matched Russia's flag, the design adopted on 3 September 1992 added the state arms โ a silver double cross on three blue hills โ months before Czechoslovakia split.
โจ Did you know?
Of the three peaks beneath Slovakia's double cross โ Tatra, Fatra and Matra โ one is not in Slovakia at all: the Matra range lies across the border in Hungary.
