What the Colors Mean

Red, White, RedRed for the blood shed for independence, white for peace and purity
Coat of arms (state flag)A vicuna, a cinchona tree and a cornucopia β€” the animal, plant and mineral riches of Peru

Flag History

Adopted: 1825 (current design)

General Jose de San Martin decreed Peru's first red-and-white flag in 1820 during the liberation expedition. The original diagonal design proved hard to sew and was redesigned twice before Congress fixed the current vertical triband in 1825. The everyday civil flag is plain; the state flag adds the coat of arms.

✨ Did you know?

Legend says San Martin chose the colours after watching a flock of red-and-white flamingos β€” parihuanas β€” take flight over Paracas Bay when he landed to liberate Peru.
