Francisco de Miranda first raised the yellow-blue-red tricolor from his ship Leander at La Vela de Coro in 1806, and independent Venezuela adopted it in 1811. Seven stars long stood for the provinces that signed the declaration of independence; in 2006 an eighth was added for Guayana province.
