Flag History

Adopted: 1912 (reviving the 1823 federal design)

El Salvador first flew the blue-white-blue of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823. In 1912 President Manuel Enrique Araujo restored it, replacing a very different flag used since 1865. The coat of arms shows five volcanoes rising from the sea and the motto 'Dios, Uniรณn, Libertad'.

โœจ Did you know?

From 1865 to 1912 El Salvador's flag looked strikingly like the US Stars and Stripes, with a star-filled canton and alternating stripes, before the country returned to the Central American blue and white.
