Flag History
Icelanders first rallied around a white-on-blue cross flag, the 'Hvitblainn', around 1900. A red cross was added โ a design proposed by antiquarian Matthias Thordarson in 1906 โ and the Danish king approved the flag for Iceland in 1915; it became the sovereign state flag in 1918 and the republic's flag in 1944.
