The Rhymed Chronicle of Livonia records Latgalian warriors carrying a red banner with a white stripe around 1280, making this one of the oldest documented flags on Earth. Legend says the colors come from a wounded chieftain wrapped in a white sheet stained red on both sides. Adopted at independence in 1918, banned under Soviet rule, and restored in February 1990.
