Adopted on 4 June 1992 after a nationwide competition won by designer Shaken Niyazbekov. The sun and soaring steppe eagle replaced Soviet symbols, while the hoist carries the 'koshkar-muiz' (ram's horns) pattern from traditional Kazakh ornamental art.
