Flag History

Adopted: 1975 (first flown 1945)

Designed in 1945 by nationalist scholar Maha Sila Viravong for the short-lived Lao Issara government. Kept alive by the Pathet Lao movement, it replaced the royal three-headed-elephant flag on 2 December 1975 when the monarchy was abolished.
