Flag History

Adopted: 1970 (proportions revised 1995)

Sultan Qaboos introduced the tricolor on 17 December 1970, months after deposing his father in a palace coup. The hoist emblem β€” a sheathed khanjar dagger over two crossed swords β€” has been the badge of the ruling Al Said dynasty since the 18th century.

✨ Did you know?

Until 1970 Oman's flag was solid red with no emblem at all β€” one of the last plain single-colour national flags ever flown.
