Gulf sheikhdoms traditionally flew red flags; Qatar's shifted to maroon — reportedly after local red dye darkened in the fierce sun — and the shade was formalised under Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani in the 1930s. The nine-point serrated edge marks Qatar as the ninth 'reconciled emirate' of the Gulf under its 1916 treaty with Britain. It became the official national flag on 9 July 1971, weeks before independence.
