Adopted at independence on 6 July 1964, adding a rising sun to the black-red-green flag of the Malawi Congress Party to mark the dawn of freedom in Africa. In 2010 the government replaced the rising sun with a full white sun centred on the flag, declaring that Malawi had now 'risen'; the change never won public acceptance, and parliament restored the original flag in 2012.
