Flag History
The original flag — a gold crescent and star on green, fitting symbols for the self-declared Islamic Republic — was introduced under founding president Moktar Ould Daddah in 1959, the year before independence from France. In August 2017 a national referendum added red stripes along the top and bottom edges to honour those who shed their blood fighting colonisation.
