Flag History

Adopted: 2001

Designed by artist and engineer Alphonse Kirimobenecyo and adopted on 25 October 2001, replacing the red-yellow-green tricolour flown since 1961. The change was deliberate: the post-genocide government wanted a flag free of the old regime's associations.

✨ Did you know?

Rwanda banished red from its flag on purpose β€” after the 1994 genocide, the new blue-yellow-green design was chosen so the national banner would never again evoke spilled blood.
