Chosen ahead of independence on 21 March 1990 from a national competition that drew some 835 entries; the committee merged elements from three submissions β by Theo Jankowski, Don Stevenson and Ortrud Clay β into one design. Its red, blue and green echo the flag of SWAPO, the movement that led the liberation struggle.
