Flag History

Adopted: 1954

Designed by Mohammed Awale Liban and first hoisted on 12 October 1954, while the territory was a UN trust under Italian administration β€” hence the UN-blue field. It became the national flag when British and Italian Somaliland united at independence in 1960.

✨ Did you know?

Each point of the star stands for one of five Somali-inhabited territories β€” British Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, Djibouti, eastern Ethiopia and northern Kenya β€” though only the first two ever united under the flag.
