Chosen from an open competition that drew over a thousand entries, won by art teacher Grantley W. Prescod, and first raised at independence on 30 November 1966. The trident is lifted from the colonial badge, where Britannia held it whole; Prescod kept only the head and discarded the shaft to mark the break with Britain.
