In 1848 First Lady Pacรญfica Fernรกndez, inspired by that year's revolution in France, added a broad red stripe to the old blue-and-white Central American colours to echo the French tricolour. The coat of arms on the state flag shows three volcanoes between the Caribbean and the Pacific, with seven stars for the provinces โ the seventh added in 1964.
