Flag History

Adopted: 2002 (serrated edge dates to the 1930s)

Bahrain's plain red banner gained its white stripe under the 1820 General Maritime Treaty, by which Britain asked friendly Gulf states to show white on their flags. A serrated edge was added in the 1930s to distinguish it from its neighbours' flags, and in 2002 King Hamad fixed the number of points at exactly five.

โœจ Did you know?

The zigzag is doctrine you can count: since 2002 the law requires exactly five white points, one for each of the Five Pillars of Islam.
