The five-cross design is medieval โ a banner with a large St George's cross and four smaller crosses marks Tbilisi on 14th-century Italian portolan charts. Revived in the 1990s and carried by Mikheil Saakashvili's opposition movement, it became the state flag in January 2004, weeks after the Rose Revolution.
