Flag History

Adopted: 2008 (stars removed)

Iraq adopted the pan-Arab red-white-black tricolor in 1963 with three green stars for a hoped-for union with Egypt and Syria. Saddam Hussein added 'Allahu Akbar' between the stars during the 1991 Gulf War; in 2004 the script was redone in Kufic calligraphy, and in 2008 the stars were removed, leaving only the takbir.

โœจ Did you know?

The takbir added in 1991 was reportedly modeled on Saddam Hussein's own handwriting โ€” one reason it was replaced with neutral Kufic script after his fall.
