What the Colors Mean

Chosen through a 1960 competition won by ฤฐsmet Gรผney, a Turkish Cypriot art teacher, under constitutional rules banning blue, red, crosses and crescents โ anything evoking Greece or Turkey. President Makarios III and Vice-President Fazฤฑl Kรผรงรผk approved the deliberately neutral design at independence.
โจ Did you know?
Cyprus was the first country to put its own map on its flag โ and the map is copper-colored because the word 'copper' itself derives from Cyprus, via the Latin aes Cyprium.
