Flag History

Adopted: 1980

After the 1979 revolution the Pahlavi lion-and-sun was removed from the traditional tricolor and replaced with Hamid Nadimi's emblem โ€” a monogram of the word 'Allah' built from four crescents and a sword, shaped like a tulip, Persia's symbol of martyrdom. Along the stripe edges runs the takbir, 'God is great,' in white Kufic script.

โœจ Did you know?

'God is great' appears exactly 22 times on the flag โ€” for the 22nd of Bahman (11 February 1979), the day the Islamic Revolution triumphed.
