What the Colors Mean
Flag History
The blue-black-white began as the flag of the Estonian Students' Society, consecrated at Otepaa in 1884, and became the national flag with independence in 1918. Banned through five decades of Soviet occupation, it was triumphantly rehoisted on the Pikk Hermann tower in Tallinn on 24 February 1989, before independence was even restored.
