Flag History

Adopted: 1957 (tricolor in use since 1848)

The red, white and green derive from Hungary's medieval coat of arms, arranged as a French-style revolutionary tricolor during the 1848 uprising against Habsburg rule. During the 1956 revolution, protesters cut the Soviet-imposed Rakosi emblem out of the flag's center; since 1957 the flag has been officially plain, with no coat of arms.

โœจ Did you know?

The 'flag with a hole' โ€” the 1956 tricolor with the communist emblem scissored out of the middle โ€” remains Hungary's most powerful revolutionary symbol and is still flown on the uprising's anniversary.
