What the Colors Mean
Flag History
White and red were the colors of the Merina Kingdom, which ruled Madagascar until France deposed Queen Ranavalona III in 1897. When the flag was adopted in 1958, two years ahead of independence, green was added to represent the coastal peoples and the hope of the new republic. It has survived every change of constitution since, unaltered.
