Adopted in 1932 under the French Mandate and flown at independence in 1946, the green-white-black tricolor was dropped in 1958 when Syria joined Egypt in the United Arab Republic. Revived by protesters as the banner of the 2011 uprising, it was restored as the national flag after the fall of the Assad government in December 2024.
