Adopted in 1992 after independence from the Soviet Union, the flag places five carpet guls — the medallion patterns of the Teke, Yomut, Saryk, Chowdur and Arsary tribes — in a vertical stripe. In 1997 two crossed olive branches were added beneath the guls to mark Turkmenistan's UN-recognized permanent neutrality, and in 2001 the proportions were changed to the current 2:3.
