First raised in 1918 by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic โ the Muslim world's first secular parliamentary republic โ the tricolor encodes writer Ali bey Huseynzade's formula of Turkic identity, modernization and Islam. Banned for seventy years under Soviet rule, it was re-adopted in 1991, and the crescent and eight-pointed star sit at its centre.
