Flag History

Adopted: 2013 (the Islamic Republic tricolor shown by the emoji; replaced in-country in 2021)

King Amanullah Khan introduced the black-red-green tricolor in 1928 after touring Europe, and most later governments kept it, restyling only the central mosque emblem that first appeared in 1901. Since the 2021 takeover the Taliban have flown a plain white flag bearing the Shahada, but the tricolor is still the flag most of the world โ€” and the emoji โ€” displays.

โœจ Did you know?

Afghanistan has changed its national flag roughly twenty times since 1900 โ€” more redesigns over that span than any other country.
