Flag History

Adopted: 1959 (readopted 1990)

Adopted in 1959 as Dahomey prepared for independence from France, using the pan-African colors popularized by Ethiopia and Ghana. The Marxist regime that renamed the country Benin scrapped it in 1975 for a plain green flag with a red star, and the original was restored in 1990 when Marxism was abandoned.

โœจ Did you know?

Benin's flag spent 15 years in exile: from 1975 to 1990 the country flew a green flag with a red star instead, and the tricolor returned only after the fall of the Marxist regime.
