What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Adopted in 1959 on the eve of independence from France, it arranges the pan-African colors diagonally — a rarity among national flags. In 1970 the People's Republic of the Congo, Africa's first declared Marxist-Leninist state, replaced it with a red flag bearing a crossed hammer and hoe; the national conference of 1991 brought the diagonal tricolor back.
