Revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara introduced the flag on 4 August 1984, the same day he renamed Upper Volta as Burkina Faso, 'land of upright people'. It replaced a black-white-red tricolor whose stripes had represented the Black, White and Red Volta rivers, swapping colonial-era geography for pan-African colors.
