What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Cape Verde's first flag was nearly identical to Guinea-Bissau's because both came from the PAIGC, the party that liberated the two colonies and planned to unite them. After the union idea died and multi-party democracy arrived, the 1992 flag deliberately dropped the pan-African colors for an ocean-blue field with a ring of ten stars.
β¨ Did you know?
Each of the ten stars is one island of the archipelago β and the ring sits off-center, floating on the blue like the islands themselves in the Atlantic.
