Chad chose a vertical tricolor in 1959 that blends the French tricolor's layout with pan-African yellow and red; plain green-yellow-red was already taken by neighboring countries. The design has never changed since.

Chad's flag is virtually identical to Romania's — after Romania dropped its communist emblem in 1989 the two matched almost exactly, and in 2004 Chad even asked the UN to look into it. Romania's president replied that 'the tricolor belongs to us' and kept the flag.
