What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Adopted in 1879 after Russia helped liberate Bulgaria from five centuries of Ottoman rule, the flag copies the Russian white-blue-red tricolor with the blue band swapped for green. The communist state emblem added to the canton in 1948 was removed in November 1990 as the regime fell, restoring the plain tricolor.
