What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Designed in 1920 by Jaroslav Kursa, an archivist in the interior ministry, who added a blue wedge to Bohemia's white-red bicolor so the new Czechoslovakia would not fly a flag identical to Poland's. When the country split peacefully in 1993, the Czech Republic kept the Czechoslovak flag while Slovakia adopted a new one.
โจ Did you know?
By keeping the Czechoslovak flag in 1993, the Czech Republic technically broke the dissolution agreement with Slovakia, which barred both successor states from using federal symbols โ Slovakia let it slide.
