What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Introduced on 4 October 2006, the 40th anniversary of independence, replacing the 1987 military-era flag that carried a shield, club and spear. The new design deliberately dropped the weapons, keeping only the mokorotlo โ the conical Basotho straw hat โ recoloured black and centred on a calm blue-white-green field to present Lesotho as a nation at peace.
โจ Did you know?
The colors recite the national motto 'Khotso, Pula, Nala' โ Peace (white), Rain (blue), Prosperity (green). Lesotho is one of the few countries that literally put rain on its flag.
