Flag History
The current flag was created for the Kingdom of Libya in 1951, its black band and crescent taken from the standard of King Idris's Senussi order. Gaddafi abolished it after his 1969 coup, and from 1977 flew a plain green rectangle instead. Revolutionaries revived the 1951 royal flag in 2011, and it became official again when the regime fell.
