Flag History

Adopted: 1970

After the 1969 May Revolution brought Gaafar Nimeiry to power, a national competition produced a new pan-Arab design, hoisted on 20 May 1970 in place of the blue-yellow-green tricolour flown since independence in 1956. The red-white-black bands align Sudan with Egypt and the wider Arab Liberation colours.

โœจ Did you know?

The black stripe is the country's name made cloth: 'Sudan' comes from the Arabic bilad al-sudan โ€” 'land of the blacks'.
