The flag began as the banner of the SPLM, the movement that fought Khartoum for over two decades in Africa's longest-running civil war. It was adopted for the autonomous southern region after the 2005 peace agreement and raised as a national flag when South Sudan became the world's newest country on 9 July 2011.
