What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Created on 30 June 1964 by fusing two flags, just as the country fused two states: mainland Tanganyika's green-and-black design and Zanzibar's blue were rearranged along a diagonal when the two united as Tanzania. The diagonal layout lets both founding partners' colours share the field.
โจ Did you know?
Like the country's name โ a mash-up of TANganyika and ZANzibar โ Tanzania's flag is a literal merger of the two founding states' flags, cut on the diagonal so both would fit.
