What the Colors Mean
Flag History
The flag is a direct adaptation of the banner of the MPLA, the liberation movement that took power at independence in November 1975. Its emblem โ a half gear wheel for industrial workers, a machete for peasants and armed struggle, and a star for progress โ was deliberately styled after the Soviet hammer and sickle.
โจ Did you know?
In 2003 Angola's parliament approved a cheerier replacement design featuring a sun based on the Tchitundo-Hulu cave paintings โ but it was never adopted, and the Marxist-era flag still flies.
