What the Colors Mean
Flag History
The design comes straight from the flag of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, which won a 30-year war against Ethiopia in 1991. The front's gold star was swapped for an olive wreath borrowed from Eritrea's 1952 autonomous-era flag, whose olive emblem echoed the United Nations flag. It was hoisted at formal independence in 1993 and standardised in 1995.
โจ Did you know?
The olive wreath is drawn with 30 leaves โ one for each year of the 1961-1991 war of independence.
