First hoisted at independence from Spain on 12 October 1968, with a coat of arms showing a silk-cotton tree and six stars for the mainland and five islands. Dictator Francisco Macias swapped in his own regime's emblem in 1973; the original arms returned in August 1979 after he was overthrown.
